Way before her own babies were on the radar, Aashumi Shah was designing colorful and playful kids clothing and accessories. Now she's got her own newborn model that you may have seen as her sidekick at markets. Get to know Aashumi and mirasa design, her line embodying "handmade imagination," better in this week's Vendor Profile.
Who are you, where are you from and how are you known at the market?
My name is Aashumi Shah. I am the founder of mirasa design. Mirasa consciously designs and crafts toys, accessories and clothing for infants and toddlers.
I was born and raised in Mumbai and studied textile design & product development in Mumbai (Sophia Polytechnic) and New York (The Fashion Institute of Technology). I have always been fascinated by the traditional textile practices of India and innately inspired by the colours of the Indian landscape.
How did you get started in your business and what is your future vision?
When my niece Atia turned turned one, I designed a set of soft toys with tactile elements to stimulate her sense of imagination and play. Bundled in a 'Fun Bag' Atia took her toys everywhere she went. At the time I was living and working in New York City as a home fashions designer. In 2009, I got married to Carlos and moved to DC.
Mirasa was born.
Why do you do what you do? What is so special about your business?
There is so much creative freedom in designing for children.
'Handmade Imagination' is the foundation of my design process. Mirasa gives infants and toddlers the platform for creative play. The colors are intentionally unconventional, because a child’s world goes beyond pink and blue.
This is an inherent part of my spiritual upbringing. Mirasa contributes a portion of it's proceeds to girls' education in India at the end of every quarter. We have been doing this since the day the company made it’s first sale.
